Inline Detonation Flame Arrester \u2013 Short Time Burning: Explanation<\/strong><\/p>

Deflagration = Explosion propagating at subsonic velocity<\/p>

Detonation = Explosion propagating at supersonic velocity and characterized by a shock wave<\/p>

Short Time Burning = Stabilized burning for specified time.<\/p>

Inline detonation flame arresters are fitted with two pipe connections, one on each side of the flame arrester. Inline detonation flame arresters are designed to prevent the transmission of a detonation (explosion propagate at supersonic velocity).<\/p>

Ignited explosive gas mixture will propagate through the pipe in direction to e.g. storage tank. With pipe length the speed of flame will increases. Up to a certain pipe length \/ pipe inside diameter ratio, the flame propagate changes from subsonic speed (Deflagration) to supersonic speed (Detonation).<\/p>

Inline detonation flame arrester approved for stabilized burning for specified time is equipped with a PT100 temperature sensor mounted on the unprotected side. As soon temperature increase and stabilized flame is detected an action such as inerting or closing of a shut-off valve to block the vapor flow is necessary. This action should start within 30 seconds (short time burning) and extinguish the flame so that the system can operate safely.<\/p>

The installation position of the inline detonation flame arrester is independent of the distance to the ignition source.<\/p>

Inline detonation flame arresters are also approved as inline deflagration arresters.<\/p>
